Breed History

Rottweiler History

Rottweilers are an old Roman herding guarding breed, the smaller Rotts especially with white on their chests were the cattle herders behind the army while the bigger ones guarded the stock from attack. On their travels around the world with the armies of Rome they came across other breeds and helped in the make-up of most of the larger black and tan breeds of the original Roman empire.

As time went on they became a herding dog especially in the southern region of Germany with a large cattle auction town of Rottweill were they obtained their name, as most cattle ended up here it was told that the payment of said cattle would end up in a pouch tied around the dogs neck with his owner being able to get drunk and sleep safe in the knowledge his money was safe with his trusted friend and workmate.

Lancashire Heelers

Lancashire Heelers are a small 10"/12" black and tan, short-coated dog, liver and tan is also now acceptable. They are the smallest of the pastoral group under the English Kennel Club were the majority are registered.

The lancashire heeler which was also many years ago called the Omskirk Heeler used to drive cattle across the country up to Lancashire ( crosses of the original Corgi and perhaps Manchester Terrier are considered to be the start of the breed around 150 years ago) they moved the cattle into markets and also helped the butchers move them on into the towns.

To do this job they had to be quick-witted, fast and agile to miss the horns and heels of these cattle. Yet they are just as happy to sit on your lap or under your feet all day as they love to be involved with what you are doing and are very loyal friends.

Lancashire Heelers were exported to Sweden, Finland many years ago and they have had championship status for a number of years under the FCI system, a few have now been exported to the USA for breeding only.
